Songs Reflect Culture
Choose one of the songs and listen to it, then answer the following questions:
1. Name of song:
2. What is the tone or mood of the song?
3. What was the target audience for the song?
4. What does the song tell you about life in the United States during this time? (Feel free to Google the lyrics if you have trouble understanding what they are singing.)
5. What is its message?
6. Does it simply express an opinion about the war, or does it also call on listeners to take some action?
7. What sorts of reactions might different people (such as a young person eligible to be drafted, a soldier serving in Vietnam, or the parent of such a soldier) have to the song?
8. Do you think the lyrics in songs usually reflect the culture of the people who write/listen to the songs?
Find a classmate who chose a different song and discuss what you each heard.
Once complete we will review all songs as a class.
